The Orlando Magic just can’t seem to catch a break this season.  It began with the Dwight Howard trade saga.  That ended when he signed an opt-out waiver.  More drama ensued when Stan Van Gundy admitted Dwight wanted him fired, which Howard continues to deny.  Apologies were issued and now they’re faced with another problem; Dwight is injured.

Dwight suffered a back injury during a play against Brendan Haywood and has been trying to find a way to relieve the pain but nothing would work.  He flew to Los Angeles on Friday to have his back evaluated by a specialist.  He was diagnosed with a dreaded herniated disk in his back.  Howard has been advised to rest for at least 10-15 days, which means he’s likely to miss the remainder of the season.  Although he can return for the playoffs, which begin April 28th, the chances of him being 100% aren’t likely.  A herniated disk is a serious injury; Baron Davis sat out 31 games with the same problem.

The Magic are currently sixth in the Eastern Conference but have lost seven of their last ten games.  Although it’s unlikely that they’ll drop out of playoff contention, their upcoming schedule isn’t easy. Orlando has seven games remaining in the regular season five of which are on the road. They face four playoff teams, the Philadelphia 76ers, Boston Celtics, Denver Nuggets and Memphis Grizzlies.  They have just a three game lead over the Knicks and Sixers and could fall to the eighth seed.  Daniel Orton is the only other center they have on the roster as well as the possibility of using Glen Davis.  Still neither one can compare to having Dwight on the court.  He will continue to be evaluated and treated.
