Part 1

March 29th, at the Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial & Educational Center in New York City, The Source Magazine hosted the Women In Hip-Hop: Still Standing panel discussion. Moderated by Ilyasah Shabazz, one of Malcolm X’s six daughters, women from different aspects of the Hip-Hop culture were brought together to discuss the feminine influence in the music, the creative content of female artists, and the future of women in the male-dominated industry. The panel included The Source EIC Kim Osorio, radio personality Steph Lova, fashion stylist Misa Hylton, and Tashera Simmons, the star of VH1’s reality show “Couples Therapy” and wife of rapper DMX.

The event was a success, with panelists speaking candidly about their own personal experiences within Hip-Hop culture. Publisher and Source owner L. Londell McMillan introduced the panel, making a very strong connection between the topics of discussion and the location of the venue (the building was formerly known as the Audubon Ballroom, where Malcolm X was assassinated).

Guest were invited to tour the Freedom Sisters Exhibit upstairs after the panel, which closed the night with a historical perspective that brought an overall purpose to the discussion. Look for the full length video coming soon.
