It’s been almost a week since I attended a special screening for Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted at the AMC Lincoln Square Theaters in NYC with my three kids. Still, that “Circus Afro” song performed by Chris Rock as the Zebra in the film can’t seem to leave my head. Every time we load into the car, sit down to eat, or just watch TV, I am forced to sing this song. As far as movie promotion goes, mission accomplished.

For those who know me, they know I keep my events to a minimum. My motto as of late has been “if I have to pay for babysitting, then I need to be getting a check to leave my house.” This one, however, allowed me a chance to take my kids to do something they love to do and show my face somewhere other industry folk would be.

Invitees were allowed to view the movie before its release (this weekend, June 8) and then attend a special scavenger hunt at the actual Central Park Zoo, where the animals in the film are from (I’m still trying to explain to my daughter that we didn’t see them because those characters don’t actually live there). The kids absolutely loved the film (which kept my attention the entire time) and they took home a poster from the movie and a paper cutout Circus Afro—which I had to sneak to throw away when they weren’t paying attention. But my favorite part of the whole event was the reminder that there are others who do what I do and juggle raising their kids too. So when I sing the Circus Afro song every day for the next few weeks, I’m glad to know that I’m not the only fool who has to.

Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted will be in theaters this Friday, June 8. Get out of the club, put the drink down, and take your kids to see a movie they’ll enjoy. And don’t forget to sing the Circus Afro song.
