Tattoo Tales #6 – Chris Webby

The great novelist C.S. Lewis once said, “When I became a man I put childish things away, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.” For many millennials fortunate enough to be raised in a household with a Nintendo, every once in a while dusting off that Super Nintendo and diving back into virtual reality for an hour or two seems more appealing than doing “real life adult stuff”.

Powering on the console takes you back to when besting Bowser was the highlight of your day. Or when your biggest problem was saving up for a new controller after you threw yours against the wall cause you jumped and fell to your demise in a pit of fire and lava on that 27th attempt. Good times.

Like most of us, Connecticut-bred rapper Chris Webby doesn’t really want to put away that video-game-addicted kid in him. That’s why he wears Super Mario’s world on his sleeve, literally.

Check out the story behind the iconic cast of characters getting inked onto Chris’ in the latest edition of Tattoo Tales after the jump and check out his latest mixtape, Bars On Me, hosted by DJ Drama.

Chris Webby:

The tattoo(s) that speak the most about me, and are most definitely the first thing people tend to notice, has got to be my Super Mario sleeve. I had no idea it was going to turn into this at first, though. One hungover morning in College Station, TX, the promoter for the show the night before offered to take me to his tattoo shop for some free ink. I hadn’t been planning on getting a tattoo that day, but I was still intoxicated from the previous night of binge drinking and said “Fuck it, I’ll just get Mario tattooed on my shoulder.” We actually shot some video footage for the song “Can’t Deny Me” while it was getting done. About a year or so later I got Boo the Ghost tatted on my inner arm by my main artist Josh Glasser of Inkside Out in Norwalk, CT, soon followed with Bowser on my bicep. In the following months I ended up deciding to have him do my whole arm, with almost every character in the Super Mario games. Luigi, Toad and many more were inked all the way down to my wrist which ended in a “?” box with a fireball flower coming out of it and a Piranha Plant coming out of a pipe. Once he finished with my whole arm, I continued to get them down the left side of my back, ending with a giant, badass Donkey Kong that sits right above my hip. I still have a little bit of filling in to do, but it’s more or less complete at this point. Some people say it’s the stupidest decision I’ve made in my adult life. I tend to disagree, and think it’s awesomely nostalgic and artistically dope. Either way, it’s hard to miss.
