Borussia Dortmund advances to the Champions League final

Going in to today’s game at the Bernabéu Borussia Dortmund held a staggering lead in aggregate that would take something close to a miracle to overcome. The aggregate was set at 4-1 thanks to Robert Lewandowski’s four-goal performance last week back in Germany. WHat would it take to win? Real Madrid would have needed to win at least 3-0 (aggregate tie is decided by away goals) in order to advance to next month’s final in England.

Led by Cristiano Ronaldo Real Madrid had some solid opportunities early, but they couldn’t capitalize. Dortmund’s defense stood strong and had a few chances of their own conceding no goals in the first. Going in to the half both teams were locked at 0-0.

With 45 min to play Real Madrid was throwing the kitchen sink at Dortmund substituting Karim Bezema, Kaka, and Sami Khedira on to the pitch. It wasn’t until late in the game where Madrid finally broke through with goals by Karim Bezema (83) and Sergio Ramos (88). It was too little too late as the Spanish side would fall short yet again in the semi-finals. Madrid may have won the match 2-0 but they had lost on aggregate 4-3.

Dortmund who many thought and were right about being a dark horse team this tournament is on the Champions League Final. Dortmund awaits the winner of the Bayern Munich and Barcelona game tomorrow which Bayern Munich currently leads in aggregate 4-0. If Bayern Munich wins we will be seeing an all German final on May 25th at Wembley Stadium.
