This year marked the 20th anniversary of the legendary radio station Hot 97’s annual Summer Jam concert. While some major names from the usual crop of male stars of hip-hop hit the stage, it was the cameo appearances of some incredibly notable ladies from rap and even pop that nearly stole the spotlight.
The first surprise came courtesy of Mariah Carey, whose currently relishing the welcoming response to her single “#Beautiful.” She performed the song with duet partner Miguel. Looking like a Cali girl in an all-white outfit, composed of a crop top and booty shorts, MC was certainly feeling invincibly gorgeous.
Carey’s former American Idol judge-mate Nicki Minaj also performed. She appeared during 2 Chainz’s set for their seedy jams “I Love Dem Strippers” and “Beez in the Trap.” At the end, Minaj was quickly hugged by Pete Rosenberg, who infamously dissed her song “Starships” at last year’s festival where she was scheduled to perform, and because of his comments did not.
And continuing the inner circle of seemingly frenemies, Minaj’s arch rival and greatest predecessor Lil’ Kim was present, as she stunned the crowd by popping up alongside Fabolous. She rapped against some ’90s hip-hop beats, which was only appropriate in light of 97’s epic anniversary party. The crowed showed her nothing but love.
Rumor has it, Foxy Brown was also in the house of the Met Life Stadium, but she did not go on stage. So while all three (or four) of these iconic women in some form have had beef with one or the other, they put it aside, and kept trailers comfortable distances apart, to come out for the fans.
And here’s a bonus pic of a another surprise cameo from Beyoncé and Jay-Z, though they were there just to catch the show:
