notoutsideforyourentertainmentThe phrase made famous by Fab has been repurposed by the feminist community as a slogan to take action.

Yesterday, feminists and activists from all walks of life came together at NYU for an event titled the Hollaback Revolution.

Hollaback is an organization dedicated to fighting and ending street harassment against women.

A panel of speakers from around the world came to shed light on the subject and its social and psychological effects on its victims. It was the organization’s first ever international conference.

Notabale guest speakers include Jamia Wilson, Jennifer PoznerJimmie BriggsSasheer Zamata, Samhita Mukhopadhyay and all of the Hollaback Site Leaders.

One of the guest speakers at the event was a woman who you may remember from an infamous incident on the subway about 3 years ago. Nicola Briggs – a fiesty 5-foot-tall Tai Chi instructor and activist – was riding the subway on her way home, when a man she didn’t even know kept inappropriately brushing up against her. Then she looked down and realized why ….

The outburst that ensued caused a media frenzy, and the video of Nicola putting the sex predator in his place went viral.

Take a look below.

This is one of the more extreme cases of street harassment that Hollaback aims to abolish. However, the cat calls and taunts in the streets are undeniably ubiquitous. Whether or not one may realize that such instigations are really forms of harassment, they are.

Ladies, let us know. How do you feel about street harassment?
