Drake proved Monday night when his “Would You Like a Tour?” tour made its way to the Barclays Center, that you definitely don’t have to be from Brooklyn to receive Brooklyn love.
A gaggle of New York City fans welcomed the Toronto native with cheers and applause, a gesture that left Drake feeling honored.
“I’d like to let you know that tonight is one of the greatest honors of my life,” he said.
Drake who recently turned 27 and hadn’t had a chance to celebrate his birthday, decided to do so in Brooklyn, and it was a party.
October’s Very Own didn’t want to celebrate alone brought out surprise guests Busta Rhymes, A$AP Ferg and A$AP Rocky who performed “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See,” “Work” and “F-ckin Problems” respectively.
However, when it was time for Drake to become the star, he did so without hesitation, exuding high energy, bouncing around the minimalist white sleek circular rings stage, performing a combination of newer songs like “Tuscan Leather,” and “The Language” and older songs “Headlines” “YOLO,” and “The Motto,” proving that he has an arsenal of hits of his own, despite also performing his feature verses on French Montana‘s “Pop That,” 2 Chainz‘s “No Lie and Migos’ “Versace.”
Now, what would a Drake concert be without some vulnerability?
While performing “Hold On, We’re Going Home,” a young Dominican lady (he did say them Spanish girls love him like he’s Aventura) was brought up to the stage and was serenaded by the rapper. In addition, while performing “From Time,” Jhene Aiko made an appearance, singing the hook beautiful vocals that resonated throughout the arena.
As Drake enjoyed his impromptu birthday celebration, fans were gifted with a preview of Drake’s new song titled, “Trophies.” He also shouted fans out as he stood on a circular illuminated walkway, briefly stoping once mesmerized by a pair of legs, then continued on.
Drake admitted to calling Jay Z prior to his appearance; Brooklyn is a tough crowd. That said, it’s safe to say Drake has earned his respect from Brooklyn. As he said in reference to New York always being ready and never having to ask any questions, acceptance is a question Drake might never have to ask when it comes to New York City.
