Growing up in a fishbowl is not always easy. You’re the center of attention from the inside looking out and you’re everyone’s entertainment. Cordell Broadus knows a thing or two about that. He’s one of the top high school football prospects in the country holding it down for Diamond Bar High School in Diamond Bar, California. He also happens to be the son of legendary rapper Snoop Dogg. Although the Snoop D-O-double G is his dad, Broadus holds his own on the field with 14 career touchdowns and is blazing a trail with the game that he loves.
“Football has been a lot to me,” Broadus told The Source by phone last week. “It”s just been a great successful learning experience for me. “I’m just having fun and thankful for all the opportunities it’s given.”
The 6-2 185 pound wide receiver has 54 catches and 7 touchdowns for the season for the Brahmas. He currently has offers from Arizona State, California, Duke, LSU Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oregon State, Tennessee, UCLA, USC and Washington.
What will a school of his choosing get from someone of his caliber? “They’ll be getting a hard working student and a hard working athlete and just trying to strive for greatness everyday,” he said.
According to Broadus he’s an asset to whatever team he eventually commits to: “Some intangibles that I bring to the game are my run blocking, I create separation and I can go up and get the ball wherever it’s thrown.”
He looks up to many of the premier NFL wide receivers like the Houston Texans’ Andre Johnson, Detroit Lions’ Calvin Johnson and Dallas Cowboys’ Dez Bryant. “I like the big time receivers, not the small and shifty ones,” he said.
It was widely believed that Cordell would pick USC as his college destination because of the ties that both he and his father have to the university. Apparently, he has not narrowed down his list of schools yet and he’s letting the recruiting process take it’s course. “I look at every school the same right now,” he said. “I’m still young, I’ve got a couple of years to decide on where I’m going . I’m just taking all of this in and enjoying it.”
Family is very important to him. He credits the best piece of advice that he received from his mother: Teamwork makes the dream work. “Ever since that day, we’ve been colliding as a team and going in for the win and being positive on the field.” His father’s influence in the rap game has been influential in his life. It’s allowed him to learn about life as a growing public figure. “I learned a lot from my father—how to be a leader, and how to do things the right way and be a positive influential person to my peers,” he said.
With rap music flowing through his family’s veins, one has to wonder, what bumps in his headphones before big games. What gets him hype? “The type of music that gets me hyped up would have to be Gucci Mane, Two Chains, Wiz Khalifah, myself and a little bit of Migos.”

“To be honest, I listen to a little bit of everything, but I majority listen to the south,” he said. “They got that music that make you pimp; that makes you hype!”
With PlayStation 4 consoles releasing last week and the new Xbox One system scheduled for release today, one can’t help but wonder which one Broadus will rock out with during his down time. “Xbox—Xbox all day,” he said.
“Man we’re getting it!”
Broadus and his team have a lot to look forward to on the gridiron. The 7-4 Diamond Bar Brahmas beat 63-29 Downey High School last Friday in the CIF Southern Section Playoffs. He had 3 receptions for 35 yards in that game. “We’re taking it one day at a time,” said Broadus. They’ll play La Serna High School today.
