Republicans propose that EBT recipients work or volunteer for their fair share
Republican Congressman Steve Southerland of Florida revisited his proposal today to require able bodied adults to work or volunteer their services in order to receive EBT and SNAP benefits, FOX News reports.
With the welfare program in this country swelling to over 47 million people, Southerland challenged the Obama Administration’s proposed initiatives to battle poverty with both parties coming up with ideas to tackle the 50 year old “War On Poverty”.
The Southern Republican Congressman stressed that his proposal will exclude the disabled, children and seniors, coupling that with the idea that food stamp recipients should work, look for work, be engaged in job training, and volunteer to the community while receiving benefits.
Democratic Congressman Chriss Van Hollen is vehemently against the bill. charging that the House Republicans’ bill will cut food stamps by the billions over the next ten years. He also added that many food stamp recipients are from working families, which would send a bad message about employment to welfare recipients. The House and Senate have been debating over the food stamp funding all last year. The House bill would cut food stamps by $40 billion over the next decade. The Senate bill would only cut the spending by $4 billion.
