With the Superbowl just days away, the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks have been quite busy. With media day, television appearances, and traveling back and forth between their team hotels in downtown Jersey City, NJ and Manhattan, they’re enjoying the fast life on both sides of the Hudson River while preparing for Sunday.
Besides talk of winning championships for their respective cities, music was the topic that both teams universally discussed during Superbowl Media Day at The Prudential Center in Newark, NJ on Tuesday. Beats by Dre and Skull Candy headphones are the makeshift heartbeat for their competitive motivation. “I usually listen to big hair metal bands like the Motley Crew and Welcome to the Jungle,” Seahawks tight end Zach Miller told the Source.
Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker is not changing his pregame music routine for Superbowl. He’s sticking with what he’s been going with all year. “I usually go with Kings of Leon,” Welker told The Source. Kings of Leon is a band composed of brothers Anthony Caleb Followill, Ivan Nathan Followill and Michael Jared Followill, with their cousin Cameron Matthew Followill.
“It’s my group that I kinda go with,” he said.
Memphis Bleek once said in one of his songs on a DJ Clue’s mixtape that he’s getting his mind right, money right and getting ready for war. The Seahawks’ Richard Sherman, is known to have ultimate focus for games. After being criticized for his postgame interview rant with Fox’s Erin Andrews after the NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49ers, Sherman was contrite. “I had maybe a minute to really think about what I had to say right after a big game,” Sherman told The Source.
“And the camera was put into my face and I grew and understand the mistakes that I made from that.”
Sherman made one thing clear however: come game time, his focus will be on Superbowl XLVIII and he’ll have a particular song on repeat in his headphones: “Ace Hood’s Get Right,” Sherman told The Source.
Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning’s routine is a little bit more lowkey. He and a few of his teammates have stuck to a routine every Sunday that may even continue this week. “On Sundays, me and Jacob Tamme and Eric Decker kind of carpool together down to the stadium,” Manning said. “We stay in a team hotel a little further away, so we drive down together. I guess we sort of have mixed it up.”
Mike Adams, a Denver Broncos safety is a local to this years Superbowl. A native of Paterson, New Jersey, he is admittedly a big Jay-Z fan. Adams lists Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt, Black Album and Blueprint as his favorite albums by Hov.
So what Jigga Man tracks will Adams most likely be bumping on Sunday? “Probably What More Can I Say,” he said. “That or Allure,” he added.
Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson considers himself a big gospel music connoisseur. He lists Mary Mary, Marvin Sapp and Yolanda Adams as his top singers. “My favorite song that I listen to as I’m going out to the game is a gospel song by Yolanda Adams called I’m Gonna Be Ready,”Wilson told The Source. I’m Gonna Be Ready is a single off Adams’ 2001 Believe Album.
Wilson loves gospel but also likes some pop music and lists Grammy award winning Macklemore as one of the Seahawks’ inspirations. “Can’t Hold Us by Macklemore is kind of our song,” he said.
Superbowl XLVIII will go down on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.
