Julius Erving had a successful 16-year playing career in both the NBA and ABA.
Known as Dr. J for the clinic he put on the basketball hardwood, Erving was recently honored at Hofstra University in Long Island, NY at the school’s 40th Annual Hempstead for Hofstra/Hofstra for Hempstead Scholarship Dinner. He was recognized for both the time and money he invests in making his native community a better place.
“I’m not just a representative of Long Island but a representative of Hempstead and the education system that’s here,” Erving said during his acceptance speech.
“It’s a tremendous honor.”

The annual Hempstead for Hofstra/Hofstra for Hempstead Scholarship Dinner helps raise scholarship funds to help deserving students from the village of Hempstead, Erving’s hometown, attend the school. Erving also donated $5,000 to the Hempstead for Hofstra/Hofstra for Hempstead Scholarship Fund.
Although Erving was the most recognizable honoree, he certainly wasn’t the only one honored at the $125-a-plate dinner. Other honorees included: Garden City, NY lawyer Dorian R. Glover; Lee Jones, a retired NBA official; Julius and Joysetta Pearse of Freeport, NY respectively, president and executive director of the African Atlantic Genealogical Society, and the Nassau County (NY) Bar Association’s Student Mentoring Program.
