They call him Money Manziel for a reason because that’s exactly what he’s already bringing to the Cleveland Browns. Team president Alec Scheiner told ESPN on Friday morning that, in the 12 hours after Manziel was selected, the team sold more than 1,500 new season tickets.
“We know right now that every one of our games is going to be sold out for next season,” Scheiner said.
Although everyone knew picking Manziel would cause a frenzy, Scheiner maintains it was a football decision and not a business decision.
“The beauty of picking Johnny was that this was a football decision only,” Scheiner said. “It had nothing to do with business in any way. The fact that he’s an incredibly popular athlete wasn’t factored in at all.”
The Browns traded up to select Manziel with the 22nd pick of the draft. Prior to that Twitter was going crazy as Manziel continued to sit in the green room and wait looking like a Geno Smith part two. He was chosen day one however and the madness has begun. Not only has season ticket sales soared but fans are also lining up to purchase their No. 2 Manziel Browns jersey.
There’s still one hitch in the plans though. Manziel will have to earn that starting quarterback spot and he’s up against some fierce competition in Brian Hoyer who played quite well last season before suffering an ACL injury.
Either way Browns fans are locked and loaded and ready for the ride.
