Eric Garner—the Staten Island man who died Thursday after an officer put him in an illegal chokehold may have survived if he was giving proper medical attention, said famed pathologist Dr. Cyril Wecht in a statement to the Daily News.

Wecht, who has had multiple experiences consulting several “high-profile cases”, said Eric Garner, should have been immediately placed upright.

“You want to position him in such a way to facilitate breathing,”

He went on to state that Garner’s death was probably due to the dangerous combination of a chokehold and being pinned down.

According to the Daily News, an autopsy showed no signs of asphyxiation or a crushed windpipe.
