In a Wayne County Circuit Court today, a jury found 55 year old Theodore Wafer guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter in the shooting death of Renisha McBride, another unarmed black teenager in Dearborn Heights, Michigan last November.

Wafer shot the 19 year old in the face through his locked screen door when McBride came to his home at 4:30 am searching for help after she had a car accident near his home. Wafer testified during the trial that he shot McBride for self defense, however, when he first gave a statement the night of the shooting, he said that it was an accident.

“I wasn’t going to cower in my house. I didn’t want to be a victim,” said Wafer during his testimony.

This was another profile case of a long list of white-on-unarmed black youth shootings around the country. This verdict comes a little over a year after George Zimmerman was acquitted for shooting and killing an unarmed 17 year old Trayvon Martin in February 2012.

Wafer was remanded into custody immediately following the trial. He faces life in prison, however, many believe that he will not receive a reasonable sentence for Renisha’s murder. With the lack of convictions and unjust sentencing in similar cases, it will be interesting to see the conclusion to this case.

Wafer’s sentencing is scheduled for August 21.
