Last month, The Source Magazine celebrated Source 360 in Brooklyn, NY, a festival that commemorated the magazine’s 25 years of existence with a concert and other consortiums such as  a sneaker summit and fashion show that highlighted up-and-coming brands.

Speaking of brands, an up-and-coming brand that everyone should be watching is the LiBRE BRAND. Now in its second year of operation, the LiBRE BRAND’s clothing focuses on positive affirmations and symbolism that is both innovative and adaptive to the interests of people.

The Source first caught wind of the LiBre Clothing this summer when they hosted their Center Stage Cuts Culture Concert concert in a barbershop in Newark, NJ. Yes, a concert in a barbershop. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE ABOUT IT

A northern New Jersey based company, the LiBRE BRAND began selling crewneck sweatshirts with their “FREEDOM OF FLYNESS” slogan imprinted onto the garments. The merchandise was sold on the campus of college universities, open mic events and local boutiques who took a chance with the brand.

The company’s founder, Baruti Libre admits garnering inspiration from designers like Karl Kani, FUBU’s Daymond John, Mark Ecko and 10 Deep’s Scott Sasso.

Libre caught up with The Source and gave his two cents on his growing following and about clothing.

The Source: What makes your brand different?

Baruti Libre: What makes my brand different is that the vision and goal of the brand is larger than material gratification and that the ideals are influenced by my intellectual metamorphosis from reading books on human rights, social movements, global political history, sociology, American history and Africana studies.  The ideals that I learned from my interdisciplinary studies influenced me to create a brand oriented around the aforementioned ideals instead of on frivolity or the deification of money.

The Source: Tell us about your brand’s journey?

Baruti Libre: Eventually through learning expeditiously about the clothing business as it relates to the facets of fashion design and marketing via social media with the amalgamation of determination and persistence, I began to receive orders on my online store from all regions in the United States and even as far as Japan.  My clothing has sold out in stores in New Jersey, New York and even as far as Australia.  LiBRE BRAND is not just confined to clothing but it is a multi-sector public relations business which organizes concerts, open-mic concerts, tours, lectures and panel discussions.  LiBRE BRAND began as a clothing line but the intention of the business is to disseminate and delineate the messages of freedom, liberation, justice, originality, togetherness and empowerment for all of humanity. LiBRE BRAND is on the verge of growing and expanding which is in turn the growth and expansion of society morally, intellectually and socially.

The Source: What is your ultimate goal for the clothing company?

Baruti Libre:  My company is not just a clothing company but to adequately answer your question, the ultimate goal for the clothing sector of my company is to have my clothing worn on all 196,940,000 square miles of this globe and for the people to vehemently have an understanding of the concepts circumventing the designs which are liberation, freedom, justice, etc. This is one of the ways that can catalyze social and political dynamics for the betterment of our global community.
