Athletes, models, actors, and pretty much anyone interested in keeping their weight under control all now have a reason to rejoice.  Thanks to scientists at Scotland’s University of Glasgow and London’s Imperial College, a new additive called inulin-propionate ester (IPE) will soon be available to make smaller food portions much more satisfying.

IPE results in the consumption of smaller portions because it stimulates the release of hormones that tell the brain that the body is no longer hungry.  Without IPE, propionate is created naturally after food is digested.  However, waiting for complete digestion can result in eating more calories than can be burned resulting in unwanted stored fat.

Research findings published in Gut showed that volunteers who took IPE ate 14 percent less food than their counterparts who didn’t take the additive.  According to Imperial College London’s professor of medicine, Gary Frost, “We’re exploring what kinds of foods it could be added to, but something like bread or fruit smoothies might work well.”

Researchers are collaborating with technology company, Imperial Innovations, to make IPE marketable to the general public.
