Until about 12 hours ago, D’Angelo hadn’t released an album since 2014, nearly a decade-and-a-half of scattered appearances, awkward interviews, references in rap songs and snippets. Still, it was fitting that 2000’s Voodoo was and is still hailed as one of the great neo-soul albums the genre has ever experienced, and D’Angelo returns as D’Angelo and The Vanguard for his new record, Black Messiah, which was released to iTunes at midnight, and surprisingly announced just 3 days ago.
