For the uninitiated, furry fandom is described by Wikipedia as “a subculture interested in fictional anthropomorphic animal characters with human personalities and characteristics”.  Members of the subculture go by the shortenend name of “furries” and enjoy dressing up in furry costumes of animal characters.

Many “furries” were in attendance at their 2014 annual convention at the Hyatt in Rosemont, Illinois but before festivities could really get underway, costumed attendees had to be ushered out of the hotel into fresh air.  Nineteen hotel occupants were taken to the local emergency room and hospitalized after making complaints of dizziness, stomach sickness, and difficulty breathing.

Hazardous materials technicians inspected the area and found a pungent concentration of powdered chlorine gas in the stairwell on the ninth floor.  The Rosemont Police Department told ABC7 that they believe the gas attack was intentional.
