Georgia police chief William McCollom has been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of an investigation into allegations that he accidentally shot his wife, Margaret McCollom, with his service weapon.
The Peachtree City Police Department report their chief of police called 911 early Thursday morning to report that he had accidentally shot his wife. Â She is now listed in critical condition at the Atlanta Medical Center, where she was airlifted.
The circumstances behind the shooting remain unclear; all that is known is McCollom’s service weapon discharged, and a bullet struck his wife.
Peachtree City Police Lt Mark Brown said in a press release, “The investigation into this incident has been turned over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation due to the husband of the victim being the chief of police.”
