Nigerian Islamic militant group, Boko Haram, laid seige of the northeastern town, Baga, around the start of the 2015 new year.  Boko Haram’s goal is to create a separate Islamic state within the country and Baga is one of the cities that resisted its influence.  Without a police or military presence to stop them, Boko Haram successfully set fire to public buildings and private homes in Baga and killed over 2,000 civilians.  Survivors fled to neighboring towns and countries such as Chad.

Boko Haram has had a foothold in Nigeria since 2002 and the country’s President Goodluck Jonathan has done little to curtail its presence or expansion.  After the group kidnapped over 200 school girls in April 2014, many citizens wonder how it could be allowed to wreak such havoc only months later.  In fact, in the wake of the massacre, instead of mobilizing Nigeria’s military or providing a modicum of comfort to Baga’s displaced, Jonathan gave away his daughter in an elaborate wedding.

Presidential elections are set to take place on February 14, 2015 and with Jonathan’s only opponent, northern Muslim, Muhammadu Buhari on the ballot, Nigeria’s non-Muslim population may not feel safe in their own country for a long time coming.
