Most tourists know New Orleans as a party city; a place where there’s no proper time to have a stiff drink and dancing can take place any time your feet find rhythm.  The city’s residents, however, have a more in depth interpretation of their city as a place that provides social and civil justice.

On January 2, 2015, the last documented homeless veteran received keys to his own apartment.  Now the city’s effective plan can be used as a model for other places plagued by homelessness.   The United States Interagency Council on Homelessness’ Executive Director, Laura Zeilinger said, “The solutions that work for veterans are the solutions that work for all people”.

According to New Orleans mayor, Mitch Landrieu, documented homeless veterans were all to be housed by  January 1, 2015.  Since he made the announcement in  2014, the city’s homeless housing coordinating agency, UNITY collaborated with a total of 60 non-profit groups and agencies to eradicate the problem.  In addition, UNITY renovated an entire apartment complex for them in an area known as Crescent City.

Newly identified homeless veterans now can expect to be housed within 30 days of filing for assistance with UNITY.
