“Similarities” but “Complete Coincidence”
Over the weekend it was revealed that singer Sam Smith settled a royalty dispute with Tom Petty over the likeness of Smith’s song “Stay With Me” to Petty’s song “I Won’t Back Down,” which was co written with Jeff Lynne. “Stay With Me” is now co-credited to Petty and Lynne even though Smith says that the similarities are a complete coincidence. Lynne and Petty are credited alongside Sam Smith, James Napier, and William Phillips. Petty and Lynne will be receiving royalties going forward for the smash which sold 4 million copies.
