Brooklyn rapper Jay Bel tells the “struggle rapper” coming of age story on “Kate.”
How do you plan to support yourself, with a f*cking high school diploma, huh? You explain that to me. I mean, you have goals, you have dreams, but f*ck your dreams, you know? Get a f*cking office job, work from 9-5, and make minimum wage. And then you, you know, you, pay back, you know, uh, everything you owe to society, then in attempts to buy your soul back, you die before you reach that but, you know, that’s what life’s all about.
If you’ve ever had a dream, Jay Bel’s “Kate” is a song you may relate too. The introspective track opens with a tribal sounding drum pattern that gives the listener a sense of primal urgency, slowly working its way into a dreamy synthesis of snares and cymbals. Jay Bel waxes and wanes poetic, riding the beat, rhapsodizing about being caught between pursuing his dreams and being stuck in the harsh reality of having to find a way to survive in the world.
