Jerame Reid posthumously has an open case against Cumberland County for an alleged assault by correctional officers
Jerame Reid, the 34 year old man who was killed by Bridgeton, New Jersey Police this past December, had a lawsuit pending against Cumberland County when he was killed. His claim alleges that correctional officers brutally assaulted him while he was in the county jail in 2009.
The lawsuit, which was filed in 2011, says that Reid was punched, beat, kicked repeatedly, and pepper sprayed by COs Victor Bermudez and John Zamot on October 15, 2009 “without any justification or provocation” and then poured a bucket of cold water on him as he was virtually unconscious on his cell floor. The suit names Zamot, Bermudez, CO John Ballard, Warden Robert Balicki, and Cumberland County.
Cumberland County solicitor Ted Baker says that Reid’s legal proceedings will proceed even in his death.
Reid was shot and killed by Patrolmen Braheme Days and Roger Worley on December 30th of last year. The shooting was captured on the patrolmen’s dashcam.
