Chris Cartier comes through with the visuals for “Tempo.”

Chris Cartier is one of the newer young emcees breaking into the game.  Cartier is ready to break free of the confines created by commercial hip hop with his knack for putting out universally relatable and thought-provoking content. His newest mixtape, Black Suburbia, dropping this spring, speaks to many people who have seen both sides of fence.  Chris grew up always having a roof over his head and food on the table, in a home that his mother filled with art and music, but he was just down the streets from the projects.  Even though his home was nice, and looked like everything was good on the outside, his mom was struggling, trying to pay bills and living check to check.  Chris knows there are many kids and young adults who are stuck in similar situations, so he put his struggle on wax, and the result is Black Suburbia.

The underlying theme driving Black Suburbia is not poverty, but complacency, which is relatable at any stage of the game, rich or poor.

The first single from the tape, “Tempo,” is this week’s chosen premiere for The Signal.  Check it out above.
