Badu is many things to many people. To some, she is an artist, a dancer, a poet, a mother, and a Doula. For others, like myself she is a light and a vessel of healing through her artistry. To designers such as Tom Ford and Riccardo Tisci, Badu is a gorgeous esthetic model whose features, beauty, and style command audiences worldwide. Beautiful, nurturing, and kind (in real life), Badu is everything she represents herself to be. She deserves an applause for embodying a force and a strength that allows her to be vulnerable, unabashedly honest, real in a world where carefully crafted images of perfection are forced upon us, and acceptance is the goal.
For this we say thank you Ms. Badu. From her gorgeous varied natural hairstyles, to her distinctive fashion sense, Erykah Badu has proven that we are most beautiful when we are ourselves. Badu is in fact an unequivocal style icon. Like vignettes that interrelate into our own lives, Erykah Badu’s music has impacted each of us differently. Yet similarly we’re all able to hold on to pieces of her songs and catalogue them as chapters of our lives. Badu’s lyrics are indelibly imprinted in our minds. With songs like, “Otherside of the Game”, “Next Lifetime”, “Love of My Life”, and “Bag Lady”, Badu has been the Langston Hughes of our musical generation. Through her journey, the Dallas songstress reminds us that it’s okay to not assimilate, it’s alright to challenge the system, and most importantly criticism is all part of the process; but keep pushing and “pimp the system” while you’re at it.
