Indianapolis Colts going for the gusto.
On Sunday March 22nd, the NFL Competition Committee will be holding their annual meeting in Phoenix, AZ to review proposed rule changes that have been submitted by various franchises in the league. This year, 23 rule changes have been proposed, with most being fairly minor. The New England Patriots suggested that PATs be pushed back to the 15-yard line, while the Chicago Bears asked that both teams be granted a possession during overtime. One of the more egregious proposals came from the Indianapolis Colts, who asked that touchdowns be worth up to 9 points.
Normally, when teams hit pay dirt in the end zone, they kick an extra point field goal, then kick the ball off to the opposing squad. On a occasion, some teams attempt a two point conversion, which is only done in dire situations. The Colts are suggesting that if a team opts to go for two and successfully convert, they should have an opportunity to attempt a field goal from the 50-yard line for an added point, bringing the total up to 9 points in one possession.
They have asked the competition committee to test out this new formula during the forthcoming NFL Preseason. This would surely changed the dynamics of the game as we know it, allowing for higher scores and vastly different outcomes to games. The meeting this Sunday is to only discuss the proposed rule changes so therefore no final decisions will be made at the end of the week, but it will certainly be interesting to see how things play out.
