Ferguson officials declined to make former Iran-Contra attorney Dan Webb, available for comment, and would not immediately release the city’s contract for his services. The Department of Justice has recommended severe changes to Ferguson’s police force and municipal court practices in the wake of the investigation surrounding the shooting death of Michael Brown last August.

Webb is a former U.S. Attorney in the Northern District of Illinois, now in private practice for the Chicago law firm of Winston & Strawn. A 2012 profile in the Chicago Tribune described Webb as “often the first choice of big corporations in trouble,” with corporate clients like Microsoft and the tobacco industry.

Webb served as the independent counsel for the Justice Department investigation of the Iran-Contra arms-for-hostages scandal, and also represented former Illinois Governor George Ryan in his trial on corruption charges. Is this the DOJ’s way of subliminally saying there is something to hide in Ferguson?
