According to NY Daily News, 19 year old Tavin Price and his mother Jennifer Rivers were on their way to the beach when they stopped at a car wash in South Los Angeles on Friday. Price went to get cigarettes when a man approached him and told him to take off his red sneakers because the color was associated with a gang in the area. When Price refused and said he was not in a gang, he quickly rushed back to his mother who was vacuuming.

As the two rushed to their car, Price was shot four times in the back and chest. Rivers tried to chase the man but he got away. Price was rushed to the hospital where he later died in surgery. LAPD confirmed that Price was not involved in any gang and are looking over surveillance video to see if they can identify the suspect. A woman who was with the suspect has been charged with aiding and abetting. A vigil was held on Monday for what would have been Price’s birthday.
