Well this is awkward

Bill Cosby‘s testimony from a 2005 sexual abuse case was unearthed earlier this week, and in it are pretty disturbing comments, including Cosby admitting to the fact that he purchased sedative drugs to give to women he planned on having sex with. It affirmed the suspicions aroused by 30-plus women that had come forward over the past decade accusing the comedian of raping them.

In light of this week’s news, the above video clip adds an interesting perspective. It’s a video montage of interviews of alleged Cosby victims, concluded by an interesting clip of a conversation had between Cosby and Larry King on CNN. In the interview, Cosby describes putting what’s referred to as “Spanish Fly” in a woman’s drink with, in hindsight, troubling delight.

  • the phase “Spanish Fly” has been used by many others. The singling out Bill Cosby among many others who have been accused highlights a phenomenon in the U.S. where Black men are more fiercely pursued for alleged or actual sexual assaults. Journalist Iva Anthony found that 10 out of 15 celebrities she covered for charges of sexual assault were African-American men, even though Black men represent only 6 percent of U.S.’s population.

And Brandon Garrett’s study “Convicting the Innocent: Where Criminal Prosecutions Go Wrong” (2011) reports on the first 250 DNA exonerations in the U.S. The study shows that 155 (62 percent) of the 250 cases involved African-American men. The percentage aligns with Anthony’s article .

An alarming reality of the findings is that young Black boys, though only 6 percent of U.S.’s population, will grow up to constitute over 60 percent of the people accused of sexual assaults, accused of crimes in general, and falsely imprisoned for crimes.
