Should boxing fans put a asterisk next to the win against Manny Pacquaio?
It looks like Floyd Mayweather might have some explaining to do. According to report from SB Nation, the reigning #1 pound-for-pound fighter took an injection of intravenous saline and vitamins that was banned under World Anti-Doping Agency guidelines. Needing to make weight, Mayweather applied for permission to use the substances that are contained in the IV, was granted the exemption to use it within the eve of the fight against Manny Pacquaio. But according to USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency), Mayweather’s application wasn’t approved until after the fight. An official from the USADA had this to say
Although Mr. Mayweather’s application was not approved until after his fight with Mr. Pacquiao and all tests results were reported, Mr. Mayweather did disclose the infusion to USADA in advance of the IV being administered to him,” USADA’s statement read. “Furthermore, once the TUE [therapeutic use exemption] was granted, the NSAC and Mr. Pacquiao were immediately notified even though the practice is not prohibited under NSAC rules.
Once Floyd heard news about this accusation, he immediately defended himself and had this to say:
Let’s not forget that I was the one six years ago who insisted on elevating the level of drug testing for all my fights, As a result, there is more drug testing and awareness of its importance in the sport of boxing today than ever before. I am very proud to be a clean athlete and will continue to champion the cause.”
As more reports about potential doping violation being committed for Mayweather, this may be a major distracting for the champ heading into his final fight of his career this Saturday against Andre Berto in Las Vegas. Only time will tell as we are just 2 more days away from witnessing history as Floyd attempts to join the greats like Rocky Marciano and retired as a undefeated champ.
