The dance known as the “dab,” a simple bowing of the head into the elbow crease, coupled with the raising of the arm–held at a 90-degree angle, as if you were prepping to chop a piece of wood in half with your bare hands–so that your hand is all but touching the opposite ear, has most certainly taken over Hip-Hop, and it’s quickly spread to pop culture. As Bleacher Report pointed out, between the Brooklyn-born Milly Rock, and the Atlanta-bred “dab” dance, the NFL’s celebration of choice has quickly been whittled down to just two options.

So, it should come as a surprise to few that Jay Z, whose last two TIDAL playlists were littered with young, dabbing Atlanta artists like Young Thug and Future, hit the dance during his performance at the TIDAL 10×20 show at the Barclays Center last night–or at least he tried to. Hov didn’t quite get the full dab going–the fact that he chose to do it during a break in the drumline didn’t help–but he gets an A for effort. At the time, he and a shirtless, exuberant Rick Ross were performing “F*ckwithmeyouknowigotit,” a standout on Jay’s last album, Magna Carta Holy Grail.
