While hoverboards have been the latest craze in tech for the latter part of 2014, they also have come with a lot of risks and consequences.

From reports of them catching fire, to riders being involved in serious accidents by using them in public spaces and without a helmet, lawmakers in California are beginning to crack down on the limitations of hoverboards.

As of January 1, riders will be required to wear a helmet and be at least 16 years of age. It also prohibits the use of the motor ‘vehicle’ beyond 15 miles per hour indoors, and 34 mph outdoors.

Violators of these laws could face a $250 fine.
