Yesterday [Monday, February 1] Killer Mike, Polo the Don and Usher kicked off Black History in the most impacting way.
The three men walked into a Black-owned bank and opened up accounts in a effort to show support in the community. In a petition for others to do the same, Killer Mike took to his Instagram page with a call to action for others in the community to find a local Black owned bank and open an account.
Mike’s request was heard loud and clear by several of Atlanta’s biggest stars in Atlanta’s entertainment community and they all joined forces to open accounts at Atlanta’s minority owned Citizens Trust Bank. Jermaine Dupri, Big KRIT soon joined in the cause to strengthen the economic system of the Black community.
Dupri and Usher took to their Instagrams and shared the following video alongside Killer Mike and Usher after they all opened accounts.
Currently there are 21 Black owned banks in America, with assets totaling approximately $4.7 billion or approximately 0.43 percent of African American’s $1.1 trillion in buying power. In 1994, there were 54 African American owned banks according to the FDIC. Now, there are 21.
