Yesterday, Beyonce, Chris Martin and Bruno Mars put one one helluva halftime performance, individually killing their recent hits before coming together for a group rendition of Coldplay‘s unifying “Fix You,” while fans in the crowd colorfully illustrated the message “Believe In You.” It was a rather inspiring performance, but things weren’t all peachy peachy between Beyonce and Martin, who recently collaborated for the music video for “Hymn For the Weekend.” According to Martin, Beyonce once turned down collaborating with him on a song called “Hook Up” because the song was “awful.”

Martin once presented a song to Beyoncé called “Hook Up” and played it in the studio for her and producer Stargate. She turned it down, he says, “in the sweetest possible way: She told me, ‘I really like you – but this is awful.'”

Yikes. Thankfully, Martin didn’t take it personally, and their most recent collaboration appears on Coldplay’s recently released album, A Head Full of Dreams. The Coldplay lead singer’s comments appear in a sneak peek of his new cover story for Rolling Stone, which you can check out here.
