Rihanna, from the moment she stepped on the scene as a burgeoning reggae inspired songstress, had a grip on a style all her own. The iconic crooner has expressed her character through a fashion that stuns, allures and often polarizes. Her personal aesthetic has made the fashion world forcibly pay attention and analyze, overtly accepting her as one of their own. Whether its in receiving a customized Givenchy tee from Riccardo Tisci himself or gaining a large scale Puma clothing deal, Rihanna is an elite member of the community with a grasp on both streetwear and high fashion.

Throughout the years since “Pon de Replay” smashed radio air waves, Rihanna has evolved into a fashion icon of grandeur, speaking to her fans silently each time she steps out. In 2014, the Council of Fashion Designers of America provided Rihanna with the Style Icon Award, in which Anna Wintour introduced the beautiful songwriter and said of the star “She proves that incredible style can help take a talented young woman from a small island to the worlds stage and along the way spark a lot of conversation about elegance and empowerment.”

Rihanna, sonically emerging after a 4 year solo album hiatus with Anti, is simply put a force to be reckoned with stylishly setting trends without appearing to ever try.  Today on her birthday, we take a look back at just a few, not all of her best style moments throughout the years.

In 2012 Rih stunted on the female population and male group alike in Alexander Wang. It’s rare to see an individual don Wang womenswear so cooly. Pairing a denim shirt with floral printed high rise skinny jeans ($365) and white Alexander Wang Joan cut-out detail ankle wrap pumps ($595) Rihanna embodies the designers aesthetic perfectly. She also carried a Vlieger & Vandam “Handcuffs” clutch.
