In 2010, a gigantic oil rig known as “Deepwater Horizon” exploded off the Gulf of Mexico coast, causing the biggest oil spill in United States history. 11 rig workers died in the explosion, and the resultant spilling continued on for nearly 3 more months, forcing oil companies like BP to shell out billions of dollars in reparations after they were found “negligent” following extensive litigation. The damage to surrounding water, wildlife and communities was extensive, and is still being repaired to this day.

Mark Wahlberg is set to star in Deepwater Horizon, a Peter Berg-directed film about one of the largest man-made disasters in American history, alongside Kate Hudson, Kurt Russell and and John Malkovich. As per a statement released by the film’s studio, Deepwater Horizon “honors the brave men and women whose heroism would save many on board, and change everyone’s lives forever.” You can watch the chilling trailer above, and get ready to check the film out when it arrives this September.
