In front of a nationally televised audience on ESPN2, The Delaware 87ers went up against the Canton Charge, and 2014 2nd-round draft pick (Pelicans) Russ Smith went bananas in his team’s losing effort. The Sevens guard went 24-of-42 from the field to drop a new NBADL single-game record 65 points.

Smith broke the previous mark of 61 points, which was set by his former Delaware teammate, Jordan McRae. McRae took to Twitter to shout out his teammate.

Russ is no stranger to being the focus of an offense, as he was the anchor to Louisville’s cinderella run to a National Championship in 2013. A consensus first-team All-American, Smith has only played 27 NBA games in his young 2-year career for the Memphis Grizzlies and New Orleans Pelicans, but is averaging 27.9 points and 7.9 assists in 22 games with Delaware. With the Grizzlies struggling to hold the 5th playoff spot tightly thanks to players being hit with the injury bug, it looks like they can use Smith’s playmaking services.
