Nicki Minaj sat down with Ellen Degeneres recently to discuss the complicated optics on her ongoing relationship with Meek Mill.
When asked about her engagement ring, Nicki clarified that the ring is not an engagement ring, but it is a gift from a ‘boy who likes her’. Nicki then went on to explain that she has two rings from Meek Mill, and that he told her that the third one is what would seal the deal.
“First of all, that’s not an engagement ring,” Nicki said. “I have two rings from this boy who likes me. He said that that’s my second ring and if I get a third ring that that would be the engagement ring.”
Although Nicki told Ellen that she’s unsure if she’s ready to receive the third ring, she did explain why she’s taking the cautious approach to relationships.
“We’re still figuring each other out. In fact, I don’t even want to say I’m in a relationship anymore cause I think when people hear that, they go to a mean place,” Nicki continued. “I used to say I’m not in a relationship even though I was in a 12-year relationship. Then now, [I’m] just going back to that and saying I’m single.”
Nicki also addressed rumors that the couple was on the outs on Valentines Day, clarifying that the two actually spent the whole day together. Nicki also explained that the whole experience with rumors on her relationship taught her not to worry so much about what others thought about her happiness.
“It just made me realize, no matter how great your life is, you can’t even impress people. You just have to do you and make yourself happy,” she said. “And forget trying to get everyone’s approval. It’s better to just keep those things sacred. So now, I don’t really care to say I’m in a relationship. There’s a boy that likes me, that’s all.” She continued: “He and I are just two souls right now passing through the universe and I don’t know what’s going to happen and I have learned over the years to just let things be and come and go.”
