Earlier this month, tragedy struck the family of former New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith, when he was killed after being shot several times by a man with whom he’d gotten into a verbal altercation with following a vehicular incident. Smith lightly bumped another man’s car with his, and after driving off, was chased down by the man, who argued with Smith before shooting Smith several times and his wife once, killing Mr. Smith.

Today, a New Orleans grand jury indicted a man named Cardell Hayes on charges of second-degree murder in the death of Smith, and attempted second-degree murder in the shooting of his wife. Hayes was additionally charged with aggravated criminal damage and aggravated criminal assault with a firearm.

Emily Lane of the Times-Picayne points out that Hayes’ legal team is “suggesting” that the shooting occurred in self-defense.
