Prince’s influence around the world is/was undeniable. As the world turned purple in honor of the legend passing, many paid tribute with quotes, lyrics and more. A local Nashville sports anchor tried to follow suit and incorporate the star’s lyrics in a recent broadcast and it unfortunately cost him his job.

Dan Phillips, television sports anchor for WZTV Fox-17, claims he was fired after a recent Prince-themed sports report that paid tribute to the late icon.

“First of all, I want to thank everyone for the kind words, comments and positive feedback on this tribute I did to Prince last week. It really means a lot,” Phillips expressed on Facebook. “Unfortunately, there were apparently some viewers, as well as management at the station, who did not feel the same way. They felt I was insensitive. And as a result, I was terminated today.”

Phillips was contacted by The Tennessean to comment and declined.
