The streaming service announced today [Thursday, May 5] that they have picked up the 2014 satirical drama. Simien will pen the series and direct the first episode.

Simien said that Lionsgate has always been supportive of adapting the film for television. “From day one, Lionsgate has been remarkably supportive of the vision for the show, and working with Netflix is every bit as harmonious as I’d imagined it would be.”

The film takes place at a fictional, predominantly white Ivy League School and highlights the daily racial tensions and stereotypes that occur on campus. With the intent of being humorous and delivering a powerful message, the film follows the lives of four Black students with different perspectives in what’s considered the post-racism society of today.

Netflix’s Dear White People contains 10 half-hour episodes. Shooting is scheduled to begin at the end of the year.
