Yasiin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def, may still be in South Africa dealing with legal issues, but that’s not stopping the veteran emcee from releasing new music.

Produced by Ferrari Shepard,”December 99th-N.A.W.” was quietly released amid legal battles and his recent retirement announcement. The track features organ sounds reminiscent of classic rock tracks from the early ’80s and is backed sharp melodies, as Bey sings:

“Girls and ladies/Pushing out at the playground/So so beautiful, they say that they like you/Do they even like themselves, you like yourself so much/You like yourself so much, you like yourself so much “

The melancholy track, which was released on Bey’s co-founded entertainment site “A Country Called Earth” SoundCloud account, comes after Bey’s recorded apology to fans in Scandinavia for show cancellations due to his pending charges.

“I know this is the second postponement of these engagements due to the matter at hand for me here in South Africa, which I am working to resolve” Bey said. “All is well and I am in good spirits and I am looking to rescheduling these dates later this fall.”
