When asked by the interviewer, “Is it hard to have that New York sound despite what’s going on in Hip Hop?” Maino responded questioning what the New York sound actually is. Of course the avid fan would identify boom-bap as the sound that defines the birthplace of Hip Hop.

Maino questioned if the actual sound of current day Hip Hop is still defined by traditional New York rap. “When A$AP Rocky came into the game he said that his influence was from Houston music, so can we expect his music to sound like Nas?”

The Brooklyn MC also touched on Desiigner, who of course sounds almost identically like Atlanta’s Future, saying the reason he can get away with it because the times have changed, where biting has become socially acceptable. He chalked up the success of Kayne West’s artist to, “I think people just want to hear dope music and the song is dope.”
