This morning [Thursday, June 2], a large scale hunt for a man police are saying shot two officers in Fremont, California has turned into hours of negotiating as the suspect has barricaded himself into a home in an intense standoff with police.
It was yesterday a Fremont police officer attempted to make a routine traffic stop on the suspect’s white truck. The suspect backed into the patrol car and fired on the officer.
The suspect made his getaway by running into a neary Safeway store, jumping a fence, and landing on Roberts Avenue in Fremont of Northern California where shots were once more fired, injuring another officer.
The incident led to a massive search throughout the entire Bay Area involving more than 100 police officers.
The suspect has since hidden himself inside a home on the 1300 block of Roberts Avenue where officers have continued to surround the residence, ordering residents within a one-mile radius to stay in their homes and to avoid surrounding streets.
According to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect is a Bay Area resident who has a history with local law enforcement. Authorities are also saying that the home is not the suspect’s own, speculating that he may have shot off a lock to gain entry to the residence.
“What the community should know is that we’re confined to this location now, and that the greater area is safe for them to go about their business,” sys Alameda County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Ray Kelly. “We’re focused in on this one house, on this one block, in this city.”
At around 2:15 AM, tear gas was fired into the home in an attempt to force the suspect out. A fire broke out in the home possiby due to the tear gas, and police are saying the suspect was alive and speaking at around 3:30 AM when his phone died.
The latest update is that Oakland Police SWAT are now taking over for the Alameda County Sheriff’s department.
So far, there has not been any gunfire or injuries.
Three hours after confirming armed suspect is barricaded, officers still negotiating.
