Over the past 50 years, Norma Kamali has been a trend setting force to be reckoned with. Credited with being the mother of athleisure, the New York–born designer built her business on stretchy, eminently wearable styles for the Studio 54 set and beyond.
Since first opening her doors in the tail end of the 1970s, Kamali’s been pushing the elements of design: first by importing the modish Brit brands, then by introducing her own 40s-inspired vamp style. Before long, Kamali had made it her mission to create clothes that, no matter the size, were able to transition from the gym to every day life; crossing over five decades, that objective has remained.
It’s that legacy and beyond that is set to be honored tonight [Monday, June 6] with the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award. In celebration of this monumental achievement, HERSource is taking a look at some of her most influential looks over the last year adorned by some of our favorite fashion forward celebrities.
