But it was on Thursday [June 2, 2016] in an appalling and angering turn of events, that the former university swimmer was sentenced to a mere six months in prison with probation.

According to Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Aaron Persky, positive character references and lack of a criminal history caused him to be more lenient in the 20-year old’s case, citing that a sentence of greater punishment would have a “severe impact on [Turner]”.

“His life will never be the one he dreamed about and worked so hard to achieve,” wrote Brock Turner’s father, Dan Turner, in a probation pre-sentencing report. “That is a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20 plus years of life.”

Following the conviction, the female victim’s full 7,244-word detailing of the attack and its effects were published on the web and has since gone viral, offering the perspective that truly mattered in this case. On Monday [June 6, 2016], CNN Anchor Ashleigh Banfield spent part of an hour reciting the victim’s letter word for word.

Since the conviction, a recall effort against Judge Aaron Persky has also been set into motion in Santa Clara County, with more than 50,000 signatures on a Change.org petition calling for the removal of the judge who was once a sex crime prosecutor who prided himself on being tough on rape. The effort has been organized by a group of influential women in the area, including Michele Dauber, a Stanford law professor and family friend of the victim.

You can read the words of the victim, only identified as Emily Doe in a full, unabridged manuscript here via the San Francisco Chronicle.
