Breed’s first album, 1991’s MC Breed & DFC, was released with rap group DFC for the indie label, SDEG Records. A year later, he released his solo debut 20 Below and followed up with 1993’s The New Breed.

He went on to have an extensive discography and long career that was, at times, successful, but he never completely broke into the mainstream. His highest charting album was 1994’s Funkafied, which peaked at #106 on the Billboard Hot 200.

On September 5, 2008, Breed was hospitalized and placed on life-support after he collapsed during a game of pickup basketball. His kidneys had failed. Sadly, on November 22, 2008, Breed died in his sleep while at a friend’s home in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

Before his untimely death, Breed had reached out to many of his friends to help create a new album, most notably the D.O.C., Spice 1, and Too Short. He would have been 45 today [Sunday, June 12].
