Listening parties are an interesting concept. While the premise of such an occasion traditionally intends to provide media and industry insiders with an “exclusive first listen” of forthcoming projects, sometimes it barely achieves that goal but makes up for it with a sponsored open bar and trendy hors d’oeuvre. Such was the case last night in Los Angeles (June 23).

Karen Civil originally was slated to host DJ Drama‘s listening event but had a last minute change of plans (maybe even throwing some shade?) when YG announced a spontaneous performance. With BET Weekend already in full swing, such is life that everyone can’t be in more than one place at a time.

The swanky Sayer’s Club filled up quickly, with guests enjoying complimentary Effen Vodka paired with chicken and waffles (on a stick!), sliders and french fries, as DJ Kyra Chaos kept the vibe right within the room holding down the turntables.

Guests had been waiting on the festivities to get started since doors opened at 7:30, and finally just as 10PM rolled around, DJ Drama casually strolled in the room.

“I started out being a DJ,” he said, greeting his guests. “I just wanted to get my name on a flyer, so to be five albums in is quite an amazing feat.”

Going on to say that he “didn’t want to give away too much” and just wanted to “create a vibe,” Drama and his DJ went through the album piece by piece, but more-so just to name drop the impressive cast of features he recruited while letting only about 30 seconds of each track get some air time.

With appearances including the likes of Lil Uzi Vert, Meek Mill, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, August Alsina, Mac Miller, Post Malone, Trey Songz and Ty Dolla $ign, DJ Drama is further proving he knows how to put together a quality record.

Quality Street Music 2 drops July 22nd and if last night’s “tease” was any indication, it’s going to be a soundtrack of summer anthems.
